Thousands of search terms have been more important to us than Syria for 10 years.
The campaign "(Tr)end the Syrian war" reflects the interest in Syria with different search terms from our everyday life for the last ten years. Doing so highlights the dramatic lack of interest in the country, plagued by war for ten years. The goal is to bring the war in Syria back into the public eye so that people, media, and politics get involved again in Syria, the Syrian war, and aid.
Even after ten years, there is no end in sight to the war in Syria. What began on March 15, 2011, with protests for more democracy, has since cost the lives of over half a million people. Over 12 million people have fled Syria and neighboring countries or are still on the run. Five million children urgently need humanitarian aid to survive. However, the fate of these people hardly plays a role in public. The pandemic has also dramatically worsened the situation of many people: many are still living in improvised tents and shelters and under inadequate hygienic conditions.
We developed an algorithm for the campaign that evaluates search queries on Google. Google is the largest search engine, with 18.5 million users per day in Germany alone. The algorithm recognizes search terms in Germany that are searched for more on average, i.e., attracted more interest than Syria.
Google Trends data reflects the search queries that users submit to Google every day. The data is anonymous (no one is personally identified). The results are categorized (based on the search query topic) and summarized (grouped). In this way, Google Trends can show the worldwide or even regional (down to individual cities) level of interest regarding specific topics.
Google Trends graphs reflect a largely unfiltered sample of actual search queries to Google. They plot the entered search terms over time and put them in relation to the total search volume.
Since 2001, Caritas international, the German Red Cross, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, and UNICEF Germany have called for donations in major disasters as Action Alliance for Disaster Relief. In this way, the alliance signals that people in the disaster area urgently need help. All four organizations in Action Alliance for Disaster Relief are among Germany's most important and experienced players in humanitarian aid. Caritas International, the German Red Cross, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, and UNICEF Germany are active worldwide, whether in disasters that receive much media attention or in so-called "silent or forgotten" crises. Together with their partners, they provide acute emergency aid under the most adverse conditions.
Aktionsbündnis Katastrophenhilfe and its member organizations urgently ask for your support - so that this war does not celebrate another anniversary. With a donation, you can ensure active help in Syria.
Do not forget the fate of the people in Syria, and help with your donation!
