Thousands of search terms have been more important to us than Syria for 10 years.
The campaign "(Tr)end the Syrian war" compares the search interest in Syria in the period of the last ten years with terms from everyday life, media, or leisure. The campaign highlights the dramatic lack of interest in the country, which has been plagued by war for ten years.
By analyzing the search queries on Google, the campaign shows how topics such as 'asparagus,' the 'weather in Hamburg' or the TV show 'The Bachelor' are searched for more frequently than Syria. The heartbeat of search queries on these topics is steady and continuous, while that of Syria is approaching pre-war levels and is in danger of dropping out altogether. If Syria were a patient, it would be on the verge of cardiac arrest.
Even after ten years, there is no end in sight to the war in Syria. What began on March 15, 2011, with protests for more democracy, has since cost the lives of more than half a million people.
More than 12 million people have fled or are still on the run in Syria and neighbouring countries. Five million children urgently need humanitarian aid to survive. However, the fate of these people hardly plays a role in public.
The four organizations of Action Alliance for Disaster Relief - Caritas international, the German Red Cross, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, and UNICEF Germany - are working with their partners to provide acute emergency aid under the most adverse conditions.
